COMPANY
The company was oficially
founded on May, 2, 1990. Livros do Oriente - the sole private book publishing
company still operating in Macau has been reinforcing a publication
project aiming to divulge Macau´s historical and cultural reality
in order to safeguard the collective memory of the Macanese community.
The founders - journalists and authors Cecilia Jorge
and Rogério Beltrão Coelho - have long
dedicated their professional life to a wide research and collection
of iconography and subjects pertaining to the Chinese and Portuguese
cultures of Macau. Thus resulting the publication of books, articles
in the press, presentation of papers and participation in seminars and
conferences. Since the setting up of Livros do Oriente they have extended
their work to include the promotion of local authors and those interested
in the subject Macau.
Livros do Oriente has published mainly cultural issues whether historical,
fiction, poetry or general.
As from early 1992 the company won a public tender to produce the monthly
magazine MacaU - a publication owned by the Government Information Services
(GCS) of Macau. Throughout eight-years of publication of the second
series of revista MacaU that ended in December 1999, the Macaense theme
of past and present, was presented on a regular basis to subscribers
and other readers both in Macau and over the five continents. The magazine
has since become the largest exclusive databank on the subject Macau.
A third series of MacaU magazine followed from year 2000 till 2004.
Livros do Oriente produced the magazine in two separate quarterly editions
(in Portuguese and in English) for the Government Information Bureau
of the MSAR.
Editora Livros do Oriente was distinguished in 1997 with the Cultural
Merit Medal of the Government of Macau - the first of its kind ever
awarded to a local private publisher.

Born in Lisbon in 1945. A
professional journalist since 1968 and also a publisher from May 1990
on, he founded (with Cecilia Jorge) Livros do Oriente, the first private-owned
book publishing company of Macau.
Besides other positions he was chief editor, in Lisbon, of the "Diário
de Notícias" and "A Tarde" and in Luanda of the
"Diário de Luanda", of the "Jornal de Angola"
and the weekly "Notícia".
A frequent visitor on assignment to Macau since 1979, he published several
articles in newspapers and magazines. Invited by the Governor to be
his spokesman in 1981, he then set up the Government Information Bureau
(GCS), which he also headed until January 1983.
From the latter half of 1987 until early 1990 he designed and assumed
responsibility for a Special Projects Bureau (GPE) created within the
Macau Cultural Institute (ICM) with the aim to give body to an editorial
project that included research and record of Macanese themes (culture,
heritage and iconography) and the production of originals in that area
meant for large circulation and wider distribution.
He was publisher and senior editor of the MacaU magazine, produced by
Livros do Oriente every month from 1992 till December 1999 (II series)
and also a quarterly (III series) from 2000 till December 2004

Maria Cecília de Melo
Jorge was born in Macau in 1950 and left for Portugal in January 1967.
Graduated in Filologia Germânica studies by the Faculdade de Letras,
Universidade de Lisboa. Enrolled in the Portuguese news agency ANI in
September 1973 and after the 1974 Revolution in Portugal stayed on as
a professional journalist in the newly-formed ANOP-ep and then again
in LUSA when the two existing Portuguese news agencies were merged.
She finally resigned from LUSA in 1990.
First-placed among candidates selected from over a hundred Portuguese
journalists in Lisbon in 1978, she received an intensive four-week training
in the US newspaper Chicago Tribune, sponsored by the International
Press Institute.
In 1979, requested from ANOP-ep she returned to Macau hired by the media
department of the Direcção dos Serviços de Turismo
e Comunicação Social (DSTCS). During 1979 and until the
first half of 1981 she also worked as foreign correspondent for ANOP
in Macau sending most of the news and features published in Portuguese
newspapers and aired in TV and radio stations in Portugal.
As journalist and author she has dedicated a large part of her career
doing research on themes related to Macau, the Macanese cultural identity
and the Macanese diaspora. Traditions and habits of the local Chinese
comunity, mainly Chinese traditional medicine, feng shui and
gastronomy was also a constant subject of her research.
Most of her work is scattered in various newspapers and magazines. She
collaborated in the setting up of exhibitions related to Macau, namely
bibliographical and iconographical and Book Fairs.

Member of the staff of MacaU magazine since the first edition in May
1992 (II series). Also Chief editor of the magazine from May 1998 till
December 1999, and stayed on in the III series produced by Livros do
Oriente for the Government Information Bureau of the MSAR from 2000
till December 2004.
